The Jitters

I leave in about 20 minutes. For Angie's house, that is, then we're heading to Chicago to see a concert and hang out with Kristin. Ahh!!!

My Horoscope:
Today is a 6 - You're starting to discover a new world of possibilities. Travel and/or higher education may be required. This is not a problem. You like having a good excuse to do either or both.

Whoa ....

Two things that freak me out about Singapore:
1. Drug trafficking (sp??) gets a mandatory death penalty.
2. Homosexuality is illegal.

Not that either of these things is really going to have much effect on me personally, but I don't like them.

Viva Singapura!!

From Blue Island in a Sea of Red to Illiberal Democracy in the South Pacific

Whilst researching my future temporary home I stumbled across some interesting facts, thanks to the omniscient Wikiepedia. What I am most worried about living in Singapore is living under their government -- it is a very strict and intolerant system. (You couldn't even chew gum until 2003, and even now it's only allowed if it's theraputic and you've got a prescription.) Not that I am much of a protestor or active supporter of civil liberties, but I certainly appreciate living in America for my freedom to excercise such rights. The country has also been criticized as an "illiberal democracy" -- a government whose people elect their political leaders yet are left with very little freedom, despite what the constitution may imply.

Singapore's government isn't neccesarily oppressive, but it has been criticized as being "socially rigid." Remember Michael Fay? Way back in 1994 he was an 18-year-old American who vandalized a car and was caned -- spanked with a stick, essentially -- by the Singaporean government, despite pleas from the United States government for a pardon.

So I guess that my point in this short rant is that I feel there is a very good chance I will either a.) end up in jail and not be able to come home, or b.) come home within four weeks on account of being deported. Hooray Singapore!

???

From the if you were born in the 80's in singapore facebook group:
"You grew up brushing your teeth with a mug in Primary school during recess time. You would squat by a drain with all your classmates beside you, and brush your teeth with a coloured mug."

Number One

So, here it is. My first blog. I haven't got anything to post right now, and probably won't for a while ... at least not until I make it to the other side of the world. Right now I'm banking on one of four different places:

Nanyang Technological University - Singapore

Middle East Technological University - Ankara, Turkey

American University in Cairo - Cairo, Egypt

University of Sheffield - Sheffield, United Kingdom

Hoping to go to Singapore, Turkey, or UK for the classes, but really wanting either Singapore or Egypt for the culture and climate. Thus choosing Singapore as #1. Wish me luck! :o)
